Home to the Wright brothers, creators of the first airplane, this metropolis is known as the birthplace of Aviation. During World War II, the United States Army Air Force made Dayton home to the first military airfield, parachute jump, and so much more. Dayton is truly like two peas in a pod with aviation.

National Museum of the United States Air Force

The largest and oldest military aviation museum is one of the many exciting sights to see. The National Museum of the United States Air Force, located in Dayton, discovers the history of aviation and exhibits over three hundred aircrafts and missiles.

The museum has several Presidential aircrafts in its collection. You will see aircrafts that were used by Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. However, the centerpiece of the collection is the first aircraft to be called Air Force One. President John F. Kennedy through Richard Nixon used this aircraft.

Though the exhibits of aircraft are enjoyable, don’t forget to visit the museums IMAX Theater that shows intriguing aviation and space related IMAX films. If IMAX isn’t for you, the museum offers free tours of the museum but don’t miss out on a “Behind the Scenes Tour.” This exciting tour allows you to see restoration projects in the works.

The University of Dayton

The University of Dayton is one of the ten largest Catholic schools in the nation. The school enrolls approximately 11,000 students every year. More than 70 academic programs from arts and sciences to engineering and law are offered at Dayton. Out of the entire country it was the first school to offer an undergraduate degree in human rights.

The Dayton Art Institute

One of the nation’s most superb art museums celebrates its 89th anniversary this year. The Dayton Art Institute began as a traditional art school in 1919, occupying an impressive Italian Renaissance-inspired mansion in downtown Dayton. Locals know the Dayton Art Institute as “Dayton’s living room”. Nearly all of the city’s residents have come together at the Institute at some point.

From gallery activities for toddlers to camps for older children, even this high-end art museum has wonderful ways to greet families.
